Look to donate hardcover books in good condition to your local library or thrift store.
If you want to recycle books with hardcovers, you will have to remove the cover first. (Do not forget the spine too). The reason is that it contains materials such as threads, glue, and plastics that aren't recyclable. Recycle the paper but put the cover in the trash.
