Dehumidifiers are a type of appliance that remove excess humidity from the air, thus reducing mold and mildew buildup in the home.
Many dehumidifiers use refrigerants containing hydrochlorofluorocarbons, or HCFCs. When released into the atmosphere due to improper appliance disposal, HCFCs contribute to the destruction of the planet's ozone layer and create harmful greenhouse gases. The refrigerant must be removed by a qualified professional before the appliance can be safely thrown out.
