Check with your local schools or daycares, senior centers, churches, and children's groups like cubscouts, or campfire girls to inquire about donations or needs for items
Schools, daycares or associations for community living such as senior day programs can reuse materials such as used greeting cards, various textile scraps, stationery etc. Look in your community newspaper, the yellow pages or at your local community centre for information on different programs.
Please note that craft glues, paints, etc. are considered Household Hazardous Waste and can be taken to the hazardous waste depot.
Some items can be put in the recycle bin (if made of accepted material). Otherwise, place in the garbage.
At 'Recycle This' you will find over 900 items of ways to reuse, repurpose or recycle things that would otherwise end up in landfill. They cover items from around the home, office and garden, things for particular hobbies or sports and random bits of technology, that have broken or are just out of date. Make Your Own Recycled Art. Here are a few tips:
Save interesting, odd, or compelling things as you find them - keep them stored in an organized way so you can get to them as needed.
Think outside the box.
Try making things in ways that you haven't done before.
If you have painted on a canvas with old house paint before, try something new like wire sculpture or an assembled collage.
Look for the story or hidden meanings in the things that you are creating and play off of those ideas. Something with a story that is recognizable can be very compelling.
Don't be afraid to dig a little - SAFELY. You never know what sharp or rusty things could be hiding in that hidden garage cupboard or garbage receptacle and you never know what treasure could be lurking there.
