The two primary types of boxes are corrugated cardboard and paperboard, sometimes called boxboard.

Paperboard/boxboard (the material cereal boxes are made of) is accepted in recycling programs as mixed paper. Boxes with a plastic window opening such as cake boxes or pie boxes can also be recycled, as long as they are not contaminated with any food or grease. You do not need to remove the plastic window liner from the box prior to recycling.
