Some fire extinguishers can be refilled instead of thrown away, but not ones manufactured before 1984.
Call your local fire department. You may be able to exchange your extinguisher or get it recharged.
Extinguishers with contents remaining are considered hazardous and should be taken to a Hazardous Waste depot.
If the extinguisher is completely empty you can recycle the steel body. Most scrap metal dealers will accept empty extinguishers once the head is removed.
