Furniture items such as sofas, tables, chairs, beds and lamps may be accepted curbside on your regular collection day.
We go through a lot of furniture. It would be a good idea if it was designed so that we could continue to refurbish and repair it, instead of throwing the whole thing out. (and, there really is no "out" - it all stays here on earth in holes in the ground, or sent into the air in incinerator gases and particulates). Consider buying good, used, classy furniture instead of modern, chipboard furniture.
Also, consider if your furniture can be repaired, refinished, or refurbished, instead of buying new furniture. Look in the Yellow Pages under "Upholsterers."
Furniture in good condition can be:
- Listed to sell or give away on material exchange site such as craigslist or freecycle.
- Donate furniture that is not ripped or stained to thrift stores (but call them first to see if they will take it)
- Sold or given away at a yard sale
- Some area stores buy, sell or handle consignment lots of furniture, from simple functional items to valuable antiques. Call them for details
- Put at the end of the driveway, someone might be able to reuse it
As a last resort, take for disposal to a Transfer Station.
If in poor condition and made primarily of metal, divert from landfill by placing in a scrap metal area at the Transfer station. Contact the municipality for details
Please let us know if you are, or know of a furniture repair or re-upholstery business, or a business that sells good used furniture or accepst some furniture pieces to keep them from the landfill.
