These cups (expanded polystyrene (EPS) commonly referred to as 'Styrofoam') with the #6 symbol are technically recyclable, but even if your local recycling facility accepts #6 plastics, it may not accept expanded polystyrene. Part of the problem lies in a lack of demand for recycled EPS and that Styrofoam cups and packaging are often contaminated with food and other substances.
Polystyrene takes at least 500 years to decompose.
