- Charities and food banks sometimes (but not always) accept plastic bags in good condition for reuse.
- Use them to line garbage containers instead of purchasing specially made garbage liners.
The best way to reduce the number of plastic bags in circulation is to stop using them, or reusing them over and over.
Even though we all are encouraged to use our own reusable shopping bags, somehow we still end up with plastic bags - hopefully, a small enough number to find uses for just about all of them.
As well, we also end up with a variety of things made from materials similar to plastic bags, like the wrappers on paper towels and toilet paper, packing material in boxes, dry cleaning bags, etc. These types of materials invariably end up in our homes.
Where there are facilities to recycle plastic bags and film, they can be turned into composite lumber, or reprocessed into small pellets or post consumer resin. This is used to make a variety of new products, for example, new bags, pallets, containers, crates, and pipe.
