When disposing of these types of appliances (for safety) secure or remove the doors from fridges and freezers. Remove all food from refrigerators and freezers. Do not attempt to remove motor, compressor or tubing from unit yourself.

The law, in most jurisdictions,requires a certified person to remove the coolant and attach an official notice once that has been done. The coolant contains CFCs ( chlorofluorocarbons) which damage the earth's ozone layer if they escape into the atmosphere. Dealers who sell used fridges and freezers normally have the appropriate certification to remove it, and usually they charge a fee for this service.

Fridges, freezers, airconditioners and humidifiers that are not worth repairing should be passed on to a scrap metal dealer rather than landfilled. Scrap metal dealers accept them, if they have certification that the freon has been properly removed, and many even offer free pick-up of these larger items..
