Keeping pumpkins out of the landfill is good for the environment and saves property tax dollars.

Pumpkins are 90 percent water and break down quickly.

• Compost your leftover Halloween pumpkin outside in the garden and it will become great fertilizer for your plants.
• If you don’t have the space to compost, check with farms in the area. Many local farms use the pumpkins to fertilize future crops.
• Never use carved Halloween pumpkins for cooking. Once carved and sitting for a few days, the pumpkin meat can become unsafe for human consumption.
• Pumpkin guts need not end up as landfill. You can roast the seeds, just google search roast pumpkin seeds for how to do that.
• Save the seeds for future plantings, or give them to someone who can use them.
• Compost all the innards if you don't want to use them.
